Is Runway Gen-4.5 worth it?
No, not for most people. Runway Gen-4.5 scored 6.9/10 in our October 2026 test, #4 of 4, last of the four video models we ran. It lost its head-to-head with all three others. PixVerse V6 beat it 6–4–1 and costs $0.21 a clip against $0.48, with audio included.
Same 11 prompts for every model, 4 s at 720p, one generation each, scored blind. Prices are what we actually paid per clip through the Runway Dev API. How we test.
Worth it if you…
- want the best result on these shots. It scored highest of the four on Milk into coffee (8.25 vs 8.0 next best) and Kickflip down stairs (6.75 vs 6.0 next best), and shared the top score on Knight & dragon reveal (7.25).
- want a lower price than Kling 3.0 and Veo 3.1 Fast: $0.48 per clip vs $0.52 and $0.60 (theirs include audio, this doesn't).
Not worth it if you…
- need shots like Dog catches frisbee. It scored 6.0 there; Kling 3.0 and PixVerse V6 got 7.75.
- need shots like Cyberpunk drone shot. It scored 6.25 there; Veo 3.1 Fast got 7.75.
- care about prompt adherence. It had the lowest prompt adherence score of the four: 6.91 vs 7.36 for Veo 3.1 Fast.
- care about visual quality. It had the lowest visual quality score of the four: 7.45 vs 7.82 for Veo 3.1 Fast.
- care about artifacts (fewest glitches). It had the lowest artifacts score (most glitches) of the four: 6.55 vs 7.09 for Kling 3.0.
- want the strongest model overall. It lost to Kling 3.0 5–6, Veo 3.1 Fast 4–7 and PixVerse V6 4–6–1 on the same 11 prompts.
- want the lowest price. PixVerse V6 cost $0.21 a clip with audio, against $0.48.
- need sound. Runway Gen-4.5 has no native audio, so every clip needs audio added afterwards; the other three generate it.
